MPs Praise Pāmu Apprenticeship Scheme at Aratiatia Farm

Building the Future of New Zealand Agriculture

Recently, Hon Louise Upston, Minister for Social Development and Employment, and Suze Redmayne, MP for Rangitīkei, visited Pāmu’s Aratiatia Farm to explore Pāmu’s new Apprenticeship Scheme. This innovative program, set to launch in January 2025, is designed to equip young Kiwis with hands-on farming skills, life skills, and NZ Certificates in Agriculture, preparing the next generation for successful careers in New Zealand agriculture.

What is the Pāmu Apprenticeship Scheme?

Pāmu’s Apprenticeship Scheme at Aratiatia Farm provides a unique “earn while you learn” opportunity for young people passionate about farming. Over two years, apprentices will live and work on-site at Aratiatia, gaining practical experience in both dairy and livestock farming. They’ll work toward NZ Certificates in Agriculture (Levels 3 and 4) through Primary ITO, all while learning life skills such as budgeting, meal preparation, and independent living.

Key Benefits of the Pāmu Apprenticeship for Young Farmers

The Pāmu Apprenticeship Scheme is more than just hands-on farm experience; it’s an investment in the agricultural workforce of Aotearoa. Apprentices will develop critical skills for modern farming, from animal health to pasture management, all on the 1,989-hectare Aratiatia Farm in the heart of the Central North Island. With 1,600 hectares dedicated to forestry and native bush, Aratiatia offers a comprehensive farming environment where apprentices can learn the full scope of New Zealand agriculture.

Minister Upston shared her excitement about the scheme, stating:

“This programme is a fantastic opportunity for young people to build a strong foundation in agriculture. It’s great to see local initiatives investing in our primary industries and supporting the next generation of skilled farmers.”

MPs' Visit Highlights Pāmu's Commitment to Agriculture Education

During their visit, MPs Louise Upston and Suze Redmayne were hosted by Pāmu’s team, including Farm Manager Carl Carmichael, Apprenticeship Scheme Manager Gary Brady, Business Manager Kat Broomfield, and Shaun Neeley, GM Upper North Island. The Aratiatia team showcased the thorough preparations underway, highlighting the scheme’s focus on developing capable and resilient farmers for New Zealand’s future.

Pāmu Chief Executive Mark Leslie emphasized the broader impact of investing in agricultural training, saying:

“Investment in the food and fibre workforce generates greater returns to the nation than any other investment. With agriculture contributing over $130,000 per worker in export revenue compared to $11,000 across other sectors, it’s clear this is a valuable investment for New Zealand.”

Future Opportunities in the Agriculture Sector

As the demand for skilled workers in New Zealand’s agriculture sector grows, the Pāmu Apprenticeship Scheme is positioned to help young New Zealanders take the first step toward rewarding careers in farming. Through partnerships with industry leaders and a commitment to sustainable farming practices, Pāmu is dedicated to fostering the next generation of farmers who will contribute to the growth and resilience of New Zealand’s primary industries.
