Abbey Brear

From saddle to shepherding
Meet Abbey Brear, a Pāmu Apprentice passionate about livestock, learning, and life on the land. Discover how Abbey is growing her career and sharpening her shepherding skills with Pāmu.
Abbey Brear grew up riding horses and helping out on family farms. Having been around farms her whole life, she’s now ready to make her mark in agriculture with the Pāmu Apprenticeship Programme. She says:
“I grew up helping Dad on the farm before I was even old enough to have a job. I've always loved being outside and working with animals.”
Born and raised across the Waikato in places like Tokoroa, Whakamaru, Taupō and Reporoa, Abbey says the outdoors has always felt like home. She attended Taupō Nui-a-Tia College and says she always knew agriculture was her calling.
Abbey credits her father and family friend Kate White as key influences in encouraging her to pursue a career in the industry. She says what she loves most about farming is that no two days are the same—and you never have to sit still. After exploring apprenticeship options, Pāmu stood out as offering the best mix of opportunity, variety, and support. She joined the apprenticeship programme to build a future doing what she loves, recalling:
“I’ve always wanted to be part of the ag industry and Pāmu looked like it had the best opportunities for me to grow my skills and get solid training.”
While she’s confident on horseback, Abbey is most excited about developing her dog-handling skills. She's also looking to sharpen her skills in livestock management, with aims to lead a team of dogs and be a head shepherd in the next five years.
Through the programme, she also hopes to complete her Level 3 and 4 agriculture qualifications. Her goal is to run a large station of her own one day and maybe even head overseas to try station life in Australia, saying:
“My big goal is to end up shepherding with a good pack of dogs. That’s what I really want to get good at.”
Outside of work, Abbey is happiest when riding her horses and spending time outdoors. She describes herself as motivated and eager, always keen to take on new challenges and learn as much as she can.
Abbey’s story is a reminder of what can happen when passion, people and the right support come together. We’re stoked to have her as part of the Pāmu whānau and can’t wait to see where her career takes her.
